JSA honours Fashola, Dosumu

LASU students honour Fashola
Students of Lagos state university has joined the cry for a better deal from the government of Nigeria. The students made this assertion during their one day symposium organized by the Journalism students association of the university on Thursday, 10th June, 2010.
The symposium with the theme “Journalism and democracy” and a sub theme, “eleven years of Democracy: the Lagos story” discussed the various stages of events in the country since her return to democratic practice since 1999.
The president of the association, comrade Alade Abiodun, set the debate in motion when he remarked sarcastically, “democracy is simply put as the government of the people, by the people and for the people. But is our government of us and by us? Does our vote count with the massive rigging and inconclusive election tribunals? Maybe, we are asking for too much, they are neither of us nor by us and will be difficult to be for us”. He added, “Our supposed democracy is anything but positive and if you permit me our supposed democracy can best be described as civilian rule”.
The other speakers toll this line as they x-ray the political situation in the country which they still agreed is characterized by corruption, political killing, intimidation and untimely death of journalists, sit tight syndrome of political leaders with lack of basic amenities.
The guest speaker, Mr. Wale Adeoye, the deputy Editor of the Nation on Sunday in his submission challenged journalist to wake up to their responsibility of making the government accountable to the citizen. The Honourable commissioner for information and strategy, Lagos state, Opeyemi Bamidele, represented by the Director of current Affair, Lagos Television, Mr. Ayodele Agbesanwa noted that the eleven years of democrcacy in the state has been a blessing but stressed the need for more. He also beckoned on the aspiring jpurbnalist not to compromise when they get to the field.
Mr. Jimi Kayode, the HOD of the department and former Director of the Nigerian institute of Journalism called on the electorate to rise against misrule come 2011 “by voting out wrong leaders” while Ishola Adebayo, the former president of communication students’ association pleaded with journalists to hold firm to the tenets of the profession noting, “we are the most respected profession in the world and we must not compromised”.
The highlight of the programme was the presentation of award to his Excellence, the executive governor of Lagos state, Babatunde Fashola as the “Anchor of Democracy” and the former Director General of the Nigerian Maritime and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Ade Dosumu, “Excellence award in leadership”.
